Representation Theory
Media re-presents the world we already know to us. On one hand media is showing us how life really is and on the other educating us on how it should really be. You could say media dictates representations not just reflects society.
The main representations in media are:
- Masculinity
- Femininity
- Social class
- Sexuality
- Race and Ethnicity
- National Identity
- Age
Hegemonic Cultural Stereotyping
Media reinforces and circulates traditional representations and re-presents them to an audience as a common sense, for example, men and women should behave in a certain way:
- Masculinity- Bruce Willis in Die Hard, James Bond
- Femininity- weak and vulnerable female characters, female victim
- Social Class- stereotype of Hugh Grant as a middle class twit in Notting Hill
- Sexuality- Graham Norton, hyper real camp representation
- Race and Ethnicity- Ali G, extreme exaggerated Asian stereotype
- National Identity- Combo in This is England
